Begin by loading heavy furniture; the sofa makes a good candidate for the first piece. Set it in the truck, parallel to the far wall, and facing in. This will create a natural void that can be filled with storage boxes. Since the sofa is designed to handle a fair amount of weight, the first layer of cardboard storage boxes can be books or dishes. Second and third layers of lighter items go on top. The next pieces should be large living area chairs, chests, and china cabinets. Place these flush against the far wall and one of the sides. A box or two on top of the chairs is good, followed by end tables that are placed upside down. Feel free to stack boxes on your chests.

Take the legs off your dining table and make it the next piece to go. Lay it on edge, standing flush against the other side wall of the truck. Stack heavy storage boxes around it to keep it upright and stationary. Obviously, make sure the table is wrapped in a blanket. Headboards can be wedged in between rows of boxes to keep them put as well.

At this point you’re ready to load the rest of your boxes and odds and ends. Always be sure to put the heaviest boxes on the floor, with lighter ones on top. Also be sure to distribute the weight as evenly as possible across the truck floor.

Take your dining room set, for example. Perhaps yours is one that has been passed down from generation to generation. The table and chairs could easily be one hundred years old, or even older. Everyone who has used the set before you has taken great care to insure all the pieces remained in good condition. Do you want to risk being the one in the family who allowed the set to be damaged? Of course not.

Cover the table with removal blankets before you even move it out of the house. Take extra care when moving it to the truck, and if you can, remove the legs and wrap them in a blanket before you pack it. Doing so will avoid the temptation of stacking too much weight on an upright table. And as for the chairs, stack them one on top of another, seat to seat, covering each set in its own blanket. They should go near the door of the truck as one of the last things on.

Use similar strategies with all of your furniture. Always think ahead of the potential damage that could occur then design your move to compensate for that potential. In the long run, while it might be a little more work, you’ll protect your furniture from beginning to end. I’m sure you’re children will thank you when you pass it along to them.
