Restain Cabinet Doors

I’m restaining some birch kitchen cabinet doors after removing some molding / profiling from the face of the doors. After sanding to remove the old finish, the wood is actually a little darker and rougher where the molding was. What do I do to make the color as even as possible when I seal and then restain with oil-based natural color finish?
